PRESS KIT
With a constantly evolving sound that incorporates electronic music, Iranian folk, hip-hop, and contemporary classical music, Shayan is a forward-thinking, ever-changing jazz ensemble from Melbourne, Australia.
Formed by saxophonist and composer Omid Shayan, the group began in 2015 as and quintet after he won first prize in the Darebin Music Festival Composition Competition. This allowed him to focus his energy on composing for the group and provided funding to record their 2016 self-titled EP. Since then, the group continues to evolve and experiment; with size and instrumentation as as genre and technology.
In 2019 the 'Shayan' went into the studio as a seven piece and recorded their debut album Sounds From Cross Street, a nine-track instrumental album named in honour of The Cross Street Music Hall in Brunswick, Melbourne.
In 2020, the SHAYAN was awarded a Grant from Creative Victoria for the creation and performance of a new set of works with the electronic string duo "‘Melbourne Amplified Strings’. The compositions were recorded and will be released in the groups second full length album “Living in the Machine”.
In 2021, SHAYAN was one of the fifteen recipients of the nation-wide ‘ABC Jazz Composition Commission’ and will be recording new music at ABC Studios in 2022.
